What does it take to blow $5,000 in one year?
Spending $13.70 a day on random, unexpected things.
Don't think this is you? Continue reading and let's see.
Are you living paycheck to paycheck and struggling to save money? You might be blowing your money on small purchases that you don’t think will make a difference.
Let’s look at an example…
You swing into your favorite coffee stand for your regular oat milk latte. You also buy a $6 breakfast sandwich because you got up late and didn’t eat anything yet. You know you’re a hangry monster if you don’t eat breakfast (your coworkers will be so happy that you ate something).
Later in the day during your lunch break, you’re scrolling through Amazon ordering your favorite shampoo. When you’re checking out, Amazon alerts you that if you spend $4 more dollars you’ll get next day shipping. You quickly look for something (anything!) to get that next day shipping. You add a $4 chap stick and place your order.
On your way home from work, your spouse texts you and says that you’re out of bread. You stop by your local grocery store to buy a loaf of bread. While you’re checking out, you grab your favorite candy to snack on the drive home and also a pack of gum. These two things total to $3.70.
Now let’s do some quick math.
$6 breakfast sandwich + $4 chap stick + $3.70 candy/gum = $13.70
Those small things that you purchased added up by the end of the day, huh? I use to be exactly like this. It wasn't the large expenses that were holding me back. It was the small, impulsive ones that never let me get ahead.
Budgeting and tracking my expenses is what finally broke me out of this habit.
